I am a game developer living in the Pacific Northwest, enjoying the whimsical city of Portland, Oregon, with my two extraordinary cats, Girlie and Donald.
I believe games – and most other art forms – are at their best when they are at their simplest. Abstraction is one of the most important elements in gaming, allowing players to create their own narratives and see games from their unique perspectives. The ability to abstract has largely been lost in the mainstream gaming market, with unnecessarily heavy graphics, player hand-holding, and anonymous clutter making it difficult for players to experience games personally. That isn’t to say beautiful graphics and complex gameplay have no place in game design – it is to say that everything has its place, and nothing should be wasted.
